Woven Depths

April 2, 2013

Back to the weaving that seems to come in waves (anyone else have this happen, you get in moods to focus on one fiber art for an unknown period of time?) This project was made because I had been seeing numerous blog posts for a woven bag and I was starting to get a little tired of just creating scarves (the down side of focusing solely on one type of fiber art.) So I decided to use up some stash (hooray for sticking on track) and create one of my very own.

I ended up using the same warp and weft (Knit Picks- Felici Sport in the Depths colorway) and this tutorial . Mine doesn’t look as nice as that one, but for a first attempt I rather like it. The bag went through a gentle wash and a trial run as extra storage this past weekend. It is holding up well and seems to be a good size, the only think I am not fond of is the thickness of the strap, but there are ways around it I suppose.

20130401_145343I didn’t put in a lining at this point, since this really was just a trial in my mind. I think if I were to make this type of bag again I would make the long strip a bit longer just to give a bit more room, as well as using a solid colored yarn. I am not as excited about the way the striping worked out (something about not being able to line up the stripes bugs me.) The tutorial is pretty self explanatory but I had a bit of difficulty figuring out at first just where to sew the parts together, but I managed to get it sorted in short order.

20130401_145402It’s a bit rumpled due to the travel not because of the over all look. I didn’t think to take a photo before (of course) but rest assured that it is actually a pretty sturdy little bag. Considering it came from a single strip (think scarf) I am pleased with the ease of branching out.

  1. I like it. I want one. Except I want it to be a cross body bag, so you have to make super long. And I want it by Friday. 😉 I kid. Monday would be fine. Again, I kid. But in all seriousness, I DO want one, whenever you have time.

Hah, I found that tutorial recently and sent it on to my aunt who is a weaver as well. This is on my list of things to create. Well, now I know who to go to when I get confused over the folding and sewing portion! I have been wondering if you put one twist in the strap if it might help the strap feel a little less wide.
